Biotechnology is a range of processes designed to enhance foods through breeding and other scientific techniques. It uses modern genetics to enhance the beneficial traits of plants, animals and microorganisms.
What once was achieved slowly through crossbreeding, has advanced through biotechnology to allow for faster, more accurate results using recombinant DNA to transfer DNA from one plant, animal or microorganism into another to introduce a new, desirable trait.
The FDA has not required the labeling of foods produced using biotechnology, as they have been shown to be safe and identical in nutrition and composition to foods produced through other methods.
